Candidates from the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party received high scores in the first round of polling to elect mayors and town councils in elections on Sunday.
While failing to qualify for the second round, the party still chalked up impressive scores.
In the Athens regional government election, Ilias Panagiotaros came fourth with just over 11% of the vote. Panagiotaros is known for his statement to Australian TV that Golden Dawn would become the “Hezbollah of Greece”.
The party’s candidate for mayor of Athens, Ilias Kasidiaris, also came fourth but with more than 16 percent of the city’s vote. Kassidiaris has a swastika tattoo on his arm, has denied the Holocaust and cited verses from the ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ as an MP in Parliament.
Scores for golden dawn were slightly lower in the northern region around Thessaloniki with the party taking around 8 percent in mayoral and regional elections in the area.
The present trend shows that on a nation-wide scale Golden Dawn will reach the 10%, an alarming percentage compared to the 6.92% which the party took in the general elections of June 2012.
Nationally, the results would give Golden dawn around 10 percent across Greece, an increase from their score of just under 7 percent in the 2012 general election.
