The European Jewish Congress Welcomes Progress towards an EU Proscription of Hizbullah.

In response to reports that the European Union is moving towards officially proscribing Hizbullah, Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress welcomed the move. 

“We are pleased to hear that finally this issue has gained traction and there is significant development towards the official proscription of Hizbullah in the European Union,” Kantor said. “Nevertheless, we hope that Hizbullah as a whole will be proscribed and not just its military wing. Proscribing just part of the Hizbullah infrastructure will not prove effective enough and will allow this terrorist organization to carry on targeting innocent civilians in Europe and elsewhere.”

“Unfortunately, some believe that Hizbullah is an organization that has different and separate parts and that it is merely a political organization which has an armed wing and this move will sedate its ambitions. On the contrary, Hizbullah was formed as a violent terrorist organization and merely entered politics to further its maximalist aims.”

According to reports, the European Union stands poised to put the military wing of Hizbullah on its list of terrorist organizations after a formal request to blacklist the group was filed by a member state. The request from Britain formally launches a process to blacklist the group which will be discussed in early June. 

“We call on the European Union to carefully consider proscribing Hizbullah as a whole which is the only available step to blunt and harm its violent ambitions and illegal interests,” said Kantor.  “The EJC will continue working towards the proscription of Hizbullah because it is a vital European interest that violent terrorist organizations are hampered in their attempts to kill and destroy, and raise money to fund their bloody aims.”
